Last week, we had Karthik Subbaraj’s Iraivi that expressed us women, most often, do not have any freedom when it comes to shaping up their lives, and Oru Naal Koothu seems to add that even men, too, do not have much say in their lives, especially when it comes to choosing a life partner.
Oru Naal Koothu revolves around 3 women Lakshmi (Mia George), a timid homely girl from Trichy, radio jockey Susheela (Ritwika) and Kavya (Nivetha Pethuraj) a no-nonsense headstrong IT professional who want to get hitched, but they are not able to for their own reasons. While few people have the luxury to select a perfect bride/groom, for many it does not happen.
The director has used Mia George’s character to beautifully capture the emotion of a bride-to-be, who keeps seeking for a husband, for years. Mia George does not have too much of talking to do, so has to convey all the emotions through her expression.
Similarly the pretty newbie Nivetha Pethuraj plays a character that gets stuck in a tricky situation to choose between arranged and love marriage. The difficulties while deciding to get married and its consequence have been adequately explained through Ritwika’s segment.
Dinesh’s makeover is refreshing after seeing him in clichéd bearded rough looks.
Director Nelson Venkatesan’s idea is unique and it has been presented smartly interlinking all the characters in the climax. Even the accident twist in the end is a surprise.
Overall Oru Naal Koothu is a refreshing take on contemporaray marriage.
